The Rhode Island Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission is accepting applications to the Certified Local Governments grants program.

The grants will support projects within the following categories: Identification and Evaluation of Historic Resources, Planning Activities, Resource-Specific Activities, Public Education Activities, and Statewide Projects.

Priorities include:
  • Projects that help communities plan for protecting historic resources from the effects of climate change and sea level rise (State Plan Goal 1, Objective A2 and Goal 3, Objective C4)
  • Projects that promote the recognition or preservation of resources associated with historically underrepresented groups (State Plan Goal 1, Objective A3 and Goal 4, Objective A5)
  • Projects that will benefit one or more resources that are related to the places, people, or events that contributed to the founding of the United States. (State Plan Goal 5, Objective A4)

All three funding priorities are linked to specific goals and objectives from the State Historic Preservation Plan (2021).

Currently, eighteen communities are eligible to apply for CLG grants: Bristol, Coventry, Cranston, Cumberland, East Greenwich, East Providence, Glocester, Hopkinton, Newport, Narragansett, New Shoreham, North Kingstown, North Providence, North Smithfield, Pawtucket, Providence, South Kingstown, and Warwick.

NOTE:  Applicants should contact their local planning office well in advance of the deadline to plan for any needed authorizations.
