The New Jersey Highlands Coalition, an environmental advocacy group, accepts grant applications annually from grassroots groups that share its goals and mission.

The grants are aimed to help local citizen groups get off the ground and gain access to the expertise of experienced environmental groups.

The grants go to organizations working to implement the Highlands Act or that fight damaging development in the Highlands region, along with non-activist groups that educate the public about Highlands resources.

The Highlands Act restricts development in an 860,000-acre area of northern New Jersey that provides the water supply to more than half the state’s residents.

The application deadline is March 31, annually
